Our Aims and Objectives

The Friends of Samson Park, a long-standing group of locals interested in caring for this significant Bush Forever site located in the City of Fremantle, re-formed in 2019 with the vision “to bring together the community to protect, enhance, celebrate and enjoy this unique piece of bushland.”

Samson Park (Bush Forever site #059) is located in the eastern suburb of Samson in the City of Fremantle. It is a Eucalypt woodland on the yellow sandy Karrakatta soils of the Spearwood Dunes. The Park has two substantial areas of bushland separated by a grassed area which is used for recreation (bbqs, playground, dogs off leash). Paths through the bushland (dogs on leash) provide access and let walkers enjoy the bush and its significant bird life. The Park is managed by the City of Fremantle in accord with its current management plan (Sir Frederick Samson Park management plan, City of Fremantle, 2006).

The Friends group focuses on four main areas:

🌿Hand Weeding, with the aim of reducing invasive weeds in selected areas of high value in the Park, while enabling the City of Fremantle to minimise its use of chemical weed control in those areas;
🌱Planting local native plant species, with the aim of restoring original plant communities in the Park, creating and maintaining habitat for the many birds, insects and small reptiles which frequent the Park, and enhancing enjoyment of the bushland for the many people who use the Park;

💦 Watering during Nov to April the previous winters’ community plantings to establish them through their first summer. Watering is held fortnightly and volunteers from the local community are instrumental in assisting FoSP Bushcare group and City of Fremantle Natural Areas.

🤓 Providing relevant activities including guided tours of the Park to highlight its plants and birdlife, in partnership with the Murdoch Branch of the Wildflower Society of WA and the City of Fremantle.

The Friends carry out their vision through liaising with the City of Fremantle, and other local bush care and environmental groups, to support a strong and active community interest in the environment and its protection. A Facebook page provides opportunities for community participation in our events.

Since 2019 the Friends have successfully applied for funding to build the re-formed group, acquire seedlings for planting, and engage the community in events such as planting days and information to encourage regeneration.
