About this weed
Originally from topical eastern Asia, this grass was introduced as a favoured species for both lawns and pastures. It also has been used for soil stabilisation.
Description
Kikuyu is a hardy grass introduced for lawns and pastures but has become naturalised in swamps and wetlands. The inflorescences produced in summer and are hidden among the leaves. It reproduces from rhizomes and stolons. After fire it will resprout.

A major threat to the conservation values of riparian areas in particular and very difficult to remove once established. If left will spread through bushland and impact on plant communities.

Kikuyu prefers riparian areas in the South-West Province.

Management (hand)
Difficult to manually control as all rhizomes must be removed.
Management (herbicide)
Spray with 1% Glyphosate or Fusilade® Forte at 16 ml/L + wetting agent or for generic fluazifop-p (212g/L active ingredient) 10ml/L + wetting agent. 2-3 sprays over a single growing season are often required. Use unplanned fire events to effectively control any regrowth. Read the manufacturers’ labels and material safety data sheets before using herbicides. Most effective months for spraying are November, December and January.
